10–13 Cars Slide Off Ice-Covered High Point Road in Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — Authorities are responding after multiple vehicles slid off an ice-covered roadway in Winston-Salem early Tuesday morning, highlighting dangerous travel conditions across the region.

Icy Conditions Cause Multiple Vehicles to Lose Control

According to the Winston-Salem Police Department, between 10 and 13 cars slid off High Point Road due to severe icing. The affected area stretches between the 3500 and 3700 blocks, near Robbins Road, Ridgewood Road, and Friedland Church Road.

Police said the roadway is covered in a solid sheet of ice, leaving vehicles disabled and the road impassable.

As a result of the conditions, police have shut down that section of High Point Road indefinitely. Emergency vehicles are also struggling to reach the area safely due to the ice.

Investigators reported they are responding to at least five crashes across Winston-Salem as freezing temperatures refroze sleet and snow from the weekend winter storm.

Officials Urge Drivers to Stay Off the Roads

City leaders and the North Carolina Department of Transportation are urging drivers to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Additional crashes have been reported on U.S. 421 near the Forsyth–Guilford County line and on Interstate 85 South in Greensboro near Groometown Road.

Police noted that no additional officers are available to assist stranded drivers at this time and warned that response times may be delayed due to the widespread conditions.
