NORTH CAROLINA — The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has declared that all roads in western North Carolina are considered closed to the public as emergency operations continue due to severe damage caused by Tropical Storm Helene. This announcement comes as officials work tirelessly to provide essential assistance and restore regional safety.

According to a recent post on social media, significant washouts have occurred along Interstate 40 near the Tennessee border, rendering it impassable in multiple locations. The NCDOT emphasised that “travel in this area for non-emergency purposes is hindering needed emergency response, and non-emergency travel is prohibited.”

Additionally, Interstate 26 has been closed at the state line due to similar conditions.

As of now, over 400 roads across western North Carolina are affected by closures due to flooding, landslides, and downed trees. The NCDOT is prioritising the reopening of major highways and interstates before addressing secondary roads. State Transportation Secretary Joey Hopkins stated, “Our top priority is everyone’s safety and well-being,” urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

Rescue Operations For Western North Carolina Roads

On Saturday, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety announced that search and rescue operations are actively underway. Emergency responders are delivering necessary supplies by air to assist those affected by the storm. The NCDOT has deployed more than 1,600 employees and contractors to clear debris and assess damage throughout the region.
