Helene Death Toll Reaches 56 in North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The aftermath of Hurricane Helene has left a devastating mark on North Carolina, with the Helene death toll now reaching 56. This tragic update comes from Buncombe County officials, who have reported 40 deaths within their jurisdiction alone. The national death toll has surpassed 130, affecting multiple states, including South Carolina and Georgia.

President Biden’s Response To Helene Death Case

In response to the catastrophe, President Joe Biden announced plans to visit North Carolina on Wednesday. He will participate in a briefing with state and local officials in Raleigh before conducting an aerial survey of the damage in Asheville and surrounding areas. This visit aims to assess the situation firsthand and coordinate federal assistance for recovery efforts.

Ongoing Recovery Efforts

Governor Roy Cooper also took to the skies on Monday to survey the destruction in Asheville. He gathered with leaders from various agencies, including FEMA and NC Emergency Management, to evaluate storm damage and ongoing response efforts. Over 450,000 customers remain without power, a significant reduction from the peak of over 1 million outages.

Travel remains perilous in many areas, with more than 400 roads closed due to flooding and debris. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel in western parts of the state as they focus on restoring primary roads and access to isolated communities.

The storm has not only caused physical destruction but has also deeply affected families and communities. Reports indicate harrowing stories of individuals trapped by floodwaters or killed by falling trees. A four-year-old girl lost her life when her vehicle was caught in a crash on a flooded road, highlighting the dangers that persist even after the storm has passed.

Emergency workers are tirelessly delivering essential supplies, including water and meals, to those affected by Helene’s wrath. With many homes and businesses washed away, the community faces a long road to recovery.
