RALEIGH, N.C. — Trump holds 1-point lead over Vice President Kamala Harris among likely voters in North Carolina, according to the latest CBS 17/Emerson College/The Hill poll. Released Thursday, the survey of 1,000 respondents found 49.9% support for Trump, while 49% favoured Harris if the election were held today.
Trump Holds 1-Point Lead in Key Swing State
The race in North Carolina remains tight, reflecting a trend seen across several swing states. In August, Trump maintained a 1-point advantage, but Harris edged ahead in September. Now, as of October, Trump has recaptured his 1-point lead.
The poll’s findings highlight a neck-and-neck race in other battleground states as well. Trump holds narrow 1-point leads in Georgia and Pennsylvania, while his largest lead, 2 points, is in Arizona—down significantly from an 8-point lead two months ago. Michigan and Wisconsin remain deadlocked, with no clear frontrunner.
“With the race still within the margin of error and just weeks until Election Day, it’s too close to call in many key states,” said Spencer Kimball, Executive Director of Emerson College Polling.
Harris Favoured Among Undecided Voters
Among North Carolina’s undecided voters, Harris appears to have an edge, with 70% of those still uncertain leaning towards her, while 30% favour Trump. This segment could be crucial in tipping the scales as the election approaches.
Widest margin yet for NC gubernatorial race
There’s been a steady trend from August through October in the race for North Carolina’s next governor. It’s a trend that suggests the winner will be current N.C. Attorney General Josh Stein.
The difference between Stein and current Lt. Governor Mark Robinson grew an additional eight points with Stein gaining two and Robinson losing six since September. This marks the first time in Emerson College polling that Stein holds a double-digit lead.
Polling month | % favoring Josh Stein | % favoring Mark Robinson | Difference (points) |
---|---|---|---|
August 2024 | 47% | 41% | 6 |
September 2024 | 48% | 40% | 8 |
October 2024 | 50% | 34% | 16 |
Key Issues for North Carolina Voters
Economic concerns remain the top priority for 44% of North Carolina voters, followed by immigration (10%), housing affordability (9%), and education (9%). These issues are shaping the discussions and could influence the final outcome as both presidential and gubernatorial candidates make their case to the electorate.
As the race tightens, North Carolina’s status as a swing state makes it a focal point in the 2024 elections. With Trump holding a 1-point lead, all eyes are on the Tar Heel State in the final weeks leading up to Election Day.
