Donations for Hurricane Helene Victims Stolen from Church in Henderson County

HENDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) — A tragic setback has struck the relief efforts for Hurricane Helene victims in Henderson County. Donations meant for those affected by the devastating storm were stolen from Fruitland Baptist Church, but the community remains determined to continue its support.

Thieves Target Donations for Hurricane Helene Victims

Pastor Chris Pace of Fruitland Baptist Church shared that their collection of essential supplies was “ransacked.” The church, in collaboration with Fruitland Baptist Bible College, had gathered a substantial stockpile of donations for those in need after the storm. Pastor Pace explained, “We have several people in our church whose homes are completely gone.”

The church’s relief efforts attracted support from across the country, including a significant contribution from a Kentucky man who delivered a U-Haul full of much-needed items like tarps and construction bags. Bobby Garrett, Director of Campus Facilities at Fruitland Baptist Bible College, highlighted the overwhelming response, stating, “We had donations come in from Indiana, Mesa, Arizona, and all over the southeast.”

Security Challenges After Theft of Donations for Hurricane Helene Relief

Unfortunately, the generosity shown to Hurricane Helene victims was met with opportunism. According to Garrett, looters repeatedly targeted the church’s donations. “It happened three nights in a row, and we had to hire security to prevent further thefts. It was a mob-like atmosphere, with about 50 cars of looters, which was heartbreaking to witness,” he said.

Despite these challenges, the church remains committed to its mission.

Pastor Pace emphasized that their efforts won’t be derailed by a few bad actors. “For a moment, it felt disheartening, but the needs of our community are too important,” Pace shared.
