
Danielle Spencer, the actress best known for her role as Dee Thomas on the 1970s hit sitcom What’s Happening!!, passed away on August 11, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. She was 60.
Spencer’s passing was announced by her on What’s Happening!! Co-star Haywood Nelson remembered her as a “brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior” and a cherished friend and family member. “Our Shero. Danielle is loved. She will be missed and forever embraced,” Nelson wrote on social media.
Born in 1965, Spencer won acclaim for playing Dee, the smart and sassy younger sister who delivered unforgettable catchphrases like “Ooh, I’m gonna tell mama” on the ABC sitcom that aired from 1976 to 1979. She reprised her role in the sequel series What’s Happening Now!! in the 1980s, before stepping away from acting to pursue veterinary medicine.
Spencer graduated from Tuskegee University in 1993 and dedicated her life to caring for animals, becoming a respected veterinarian and animal rights advocate. Her journey included surviving a serious car accident as a child, enduring multiple surgeries, and bravely fighting cancer since at least 2014.
