GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Downtown Greenway in Greensboro has taken a big step to improve safety for walkers, runners, and cyclists with the addition of 13 Rescue Markers spaced about every quarter mile along the trail. These markers, made possible through private donations via the Final Mile Campaign, provide exact location info to first responders in case of emergencies.
When someone calls 911 from the Greenway, dispatchers can use the marker number to quickly locate the caller’s precise spot on the trail, speeding up response times. The markers are integrated into the Greensboro Fire Department’s mapping system, making emergency assistance more efficient, especially since the trail crosses busy streets and neighborhoods where identifying exact locations can be tricky.
Greensboro Greenway Safety Markers Enhance Protection
One such marker, number 75, is located at North Monroe Boulevard and Homeland Avenue in downtown Greensboro. In addition to emergency markers, the Greenway also features lighting, 12-foot-wide paved paths, bike repair stations, and drinking fountains to enhance user comfort and safety.
It’s all about making the greenway safer.
“Use these markers—they’re there to help and can cut down response times. Anytime you call 911, we’re ready to respond,” said Jones.
Three more markers will be added before the project wraps up.
