GREENSBORO, N.C. —After the official release of the Red Light Cameras in Greensboro, which was considered to return to the City, there have been many agreements and disagreements about whether that’s the next thing to do.
On Tuesday evening, city leaders voted in favor of reinstating the controversial program, which was first discontinued in 2005.
Why the Cameras Are Coming Back
Mayor Nancy Vaughan, who supported the program during her earlier years on the City Council, said her vote once again comes down to public safety.
“I supported this measure the first time it was introduced because it helps save lives, and I’m standing by it again,” Vaughan explained.
The city originally ended its red-light camera initiative following a court ruling requiring Greensboro to send 90% of the revenue generated from the program to Guilford County Schools. The city kept only 10%, which many officials at the time believed made the project financially unworkable.
Reactions From the Community – Red-Light Cameras
News of the cameras’ return has already stirred debate among residents. Some believe the devices will improve safety and hold reckless drivers accountable.
“If unsafe drivers know there are consequences, then yes, I think it will help,” said local business owner Dustin Keene.
Others remain skeptical, citing concerns over fairness and driver behavior.
“I’ve never been a fan,” said Greensboro driver Alex Sanchez, noting that similar programs in other cities make drivers slam on their brakes at yellow lights to avoid being ticketed.
Another resident, Quonel Scott, admitted he feels torn. “It’s just another way to watch people. I see the safety side, but at the same time, nobody’s perfect. For me, I’ll just make sure I drive responsibly.”
