Tariff Impacts is Affecting Us: Greensboro Artisans Struggle With Rising Costs

Greensboro Artisans Struggle With Rising Costs

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Local artisans and small business owners say Tariff Impacts is affecting us in Greensboro, driving up the costs of tools, raw materials, and everyday operations. The Forge, a makerspace located on West Lewis Street, has been a hub for innovation since 2013; however, it now faces financial challenges due to tariffs on imported goods.

Inside the 12,000-square-foot industrial space, The Forge houses more than $500,000 worth of specialized equipment, including 3D printers, laser engravers, and welding machines. Members rely on these tools to learn new skills, grow their craft, and even launch small businesses. But with tariff-driven price hikes, sustaining the space has become increasingly difficult.

“Our 3D printer. We had to order parts from Prague. Our laser engraver. We had to order parts from China. We teach welding, and looking at the price of metal and steel has definitely increased as well,” said Executive Director Tiffany Jacobs.

The higher costs have forced The Forge to raise membership fees by $20, a decision Jacobs said was unavoidable. “Tariff Impacts is affecting us directly, but we try to make sure the burden doesn’t fully fall on the young entrepreneurs who depend on this space,” she added.

For members like Michael Lindsay, the concern goes beyond membership fees. Wood, a primary material for his work, has seen steady price increases. Similarly, Ike Santiago, a staff member and pottery instructor, stated that tariffs have created both shortages and increased costs for raw materials.

“Prices for clay and glaze materials have gone up anywhere from 50% to 150%. And sometimes vendors don’t even bring in the supplies, which means we run out of stock,” Santiago explained. He has been forced to alter glaze formulas to keep his business running.
