GATES COUNTY, N.C. — A tragic boating incident is under investigation after a 75-year-old man dies on fishing trip in Gates County, according to officials with North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
Authorities said that on Saturday, a resident near Winton Park spotted an unoccupied boat drifting in the Chowan River and called for help.
Responding officers conducted an underwater search and later discovered the body of 75-year-old James Newton a short distance from the boat, which was confirmed to belong to him.
Newton was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials reported that he was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.
Investigation and Safety Concerns
An initial investigation revealed that Newton had been fishing across from Shoups Boating Access Area before the fatal accident. While the exact cause of death is still pending, NC Wildlife officials emphasized the importance of boating safety and urged the public to always wear life jackets while on the water.
