JD Vance Condemns Crime Policies

CONCORD, N.C. — Vice President JD Vance condemns crime policies during a visit to Concord on Wednesday afternoon, where he delivered a speech focused on law enforcement and rising crime. His remarks came just weeks after the fatal stabbing of Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee, on Charlotte’s Blue Line light rail.

Vance Points to Charlotte Tragedy

Speaking at Concord’s airport, Vance directly tied Zarutska’s death to what he described as “soft-on-crime policies” supported by Democratic leaders.

“So she came from a war-torn country, she sought shelter in the United States of America, and because of soft-on-crime policies, she was murdered here, not the war-torn country she came from. Isn’t that a disgrace?” Vance said.

While he offered no new policy proposals, his speech carried the tone of a campaign rally, sharply criticizing Democratic approaches to policing and public safety.

Stops in Greensboro and Davidson County

Earlier in the day, Vance’s trip began when his plane landed in Greensboro. He then made a stop at Richard Childress Racing in Davidson County before heading to Concord to deliver his speech.

Several top North Carolina Republicans, including congressional leaders and U.S. Senate candidate Michael Whatley, joined the vice president at the event.

Democrats Push Back

Democrats were quick to respond to the vice president’s remarks. Governor Josh Stein has called for a stronger police presence in Charlotte following Zarutska’s death. Meanwhile, state lawmakers recently passed a crime bill named after her, though it remains unclear if Stein will sign it into law.
