GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Greensboro mother is still searching for answers nearly four years after the 14-year-old son murder that left her family devastated. Jessica Brewer moved from Philadelphia to Greensboro hoping for a safer environment, but her son, Basil “Sonny” Wilson, was tragically shot and killed on September 20, 2021.
Basil, a freshman at Dudley High School, had stayed after class to play basketball with friends. Hours later, Brewer’s search for him led her to a blocked-off crime scene near East Florida Street and Randolph Avenue. There, she learned the heartbreaking truth: her 14-year-old son had been shot and killed.
“They instantly thought Sonny was gang-related. And I hated it,” Brewer recalled. “When I got up off the sidewalk, my body was so heavy. I knew it was my kid.”
Greensboro Mother Seeks Justice for 14-Year-Old Son Murder
Since the 14-year-old son murder, Brewer has joined a group of mothers in Greensboro whose children were victims of gun violence. Together, they walk neighborhoods, hand out flyers, and demand justice for their loved ones.
Basil’s case, now under a new detective, reportedly has uncovered fresh evidence. Still, no arrests have been made. Greensboro Police confirm the case remains an active investigation and urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
“For me, nights are the worst when I go home. Because he’s not there,” Brewer said. “But when I wake up in the morning, I’m one day closer to being with him.”
Brewer continues to call on the community for accountability and unity. “We have to do better as a community,” she said. “We are crashing. We are crashing.”
