Disabled Black Veteran Alleges Assault and False Arrest

Winston-Salem, N.C. — A disabled Black veteran is speaking out after what he describes as a violent and humiliating encounter with security officers at the Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office in Winston-Salem.

Narrick Mack, a veteran and Winston-Salem resident, says he was assaulted and falsely arrested after attempting to leave the VA facility on Tuesday. According to Mack, the incident began when security officers directed him to remove his head wrap, jacket, and chains upon entry. Although he complied, he says the situation escalated after the metal detector alarm sounded.

Mack alleges that a security officer then ordered him to remove his pants. When he requested a handheld scanner and asked for a supervisor instead, he says his request was denied. During the exchange, Mack claims one officer made a racially charged remark, allegedly saying, “Oh, they let your kind serve?”

“I felt targeted and humiliated,” Mack told Greensboro NC News. “I am a disabled African American veteran, and I never expected to be treated this way at a place meant to serve me.”

Mack says he decided to leave peacefully but began recording on his phone for protection. As he exited, he alleges that officers grabbed him, threw him out of the building, struck his phone, and physically assaulted him. He says six officers pinned him to the ground.

Despite being the only individual subdued during the altercation, Mack was arrested and charged with three counts of assaulting a government official. He maintains that he complied with orders, attempted to leave peacefully, and exercised his right to record.

Mack has secured legal representation. His attorney, Jason Keith of Greensboro, confirmed he is reviewing the case and expects to challenge the charges.

“This is not only about my client’s rights as a veteran, but about his basic civil rights as an American citizen,” Keith said in a statement.

The VA Regional Office in Winston-Salem has not yet issued a public response to the allegations.

For now, Mack says he is determined to seek justice. “I served this country,” he said. “I shouldn’t be treated like this at the very place that’s supposed to support me.”
