HIGH POINT, N.C. — Guilford Co. state Representative Cecil Brockman was arrested for child sex crimes, according to arrest records, and is being held without bond following serious allegations involving a 15-year-old minor.
The 41-year-old North Carolina lawmaker, who represents District 60 in Guilford County, was taken into custody by the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday. Brockman faces two counts of statutory sex offense with a child 15 or younger and two counts of indecent liberties with a child, according to court documents.
Officials say Brockman suffered a “medical emergency” Thursday morning ahead of his scheduled court appearance and has since had his first appearance postponed until Friday.
Court filings allege that Brockman engaged in sexual acts with a 15-year-old and later attempted to contact the victim. The documents further claim he tried to locate the juvenile in a hospital and allegedly used his position to gain access to information about the victim’s whereabouts.
He remains jailed under no bond as the investigation continues.
Calls for Resignation Grow Across Party Lines
The arrest has prompted swift and bipartisan condemnation from state officials. Governor Josh Stein called the charges “extremely serious and deeply troubling,” urging the representative to step down immediately.
“While the criminal justice process takes effect, he cannot be effective representing his constituents, and he should resign,” said Stein.
The North Carolina Democratic Party also released a statement calling for his immediate resignation:
“The profound seriousness of these criminal charges makes it impossible for him to effectively represent his community.”
The North Carolina GOP echoed those sentiments, writing, “These allegations are abhorrent. If true, there is no place in public service now or in the future for someone accused of these heinous crimes.”
House Speaker Destin Hall added, “The charges against Rep. Brockman are shocking and extremely serious. Given the evidence that’s publicly known, he should resign immediately so these charges do not distract from the work of the North Carolina House.”
Neighbors React to Late-Night Arrest
Residents near Brockman’s family home in High Point described a heavy police presence during the arrest.
“There were some cops that pulled up, and they just kind of stayed out in the street, which kind of drew my attention,” said Jessica Quilit, a neighbor. “Then there were some tow trucks that came and took the cars that were outside her house — it was like two SUV-type cars.”
As of Thursday night, Guilford Co. state Representative Cecil Brockman remains in custody as officials prepare for his Friday court appearance. The case continues to develop, and additional information is expected to emerge in the coming days.
