GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — The Greensboro Fire Department has added a new and very special member to its team — an eight-week-old Golden Retriever puppy who will serve as the department’s first-ever therapy dog.
While she won’t be battling blazes, this furry recruit will play a crucial role in supporting firefighters’ mental health. Once fully trained, she’ll help Greensboro Fire Department personnel decompress and manage stress after traumatic calls and long shifts away from family.
“Firefighters go through a lot,” said Captain Shawn Hyatt, an EMT coordinator and the puppy’s handler. “There are times when you just need a little pick-me-up, and mental health is really important to us. I believe she will go a long way in helping us.”
The therapy dog was purchased for the department by the Greensboro Firefighters Foundation (GFF), with financial support from the Bryan Foundation. The GFF collaborated with a retired firefighter-turned-trainer in Charlotte who specializes in training dogs for firehouses.

“This is the first project of the Greensboro Firefighters Foundation,” said GFF President Potter. “The chief asked for a therapy dog, and we’ve been working on this for about six months. Her purpose is to help with mental health at the fire department.”
Beyond the firehouse, the therapy dog will also participate in community events, offering comfort and connection to residents throughout Greensboro.
The Greensboro Fire Department is now asking the public to help name its newest member. Hundreds of creative suggestions have already been submitted — including “Hydrant,” “Aerial,” “Blaze,” and “Sparky.”
Firefighters say that regardless of what name is chosen, she’s already a beloved part of the team.
Community members can submit their name ideas through the Greensboro Fire Department’s social media pages, and the winning name will be announced once voting is complete.
