GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Marikay Abuzuaiter wins Greensboro mayoral race after voters across the city went to the polls Tuesday to decide key municipal contests, including the mayor’s seat and all city council positions.
Abuzuaiter, the longtime councilwoman and current Mayor Pro Tem, secured victory after former mayor Robbie Perkins conceded. Her election follows current Mayor Nancy Vaughan’s decision not to seek reelection after more than a decade in office.
The results mark a new chapter for Greensboro leadership, as Abuzuaiter’s move to the mayor’s seat and the passing of Councilwoman Yvonne Johnson last year opened multiple council positions for new contenders.
City Council Election Results:
- At-Large: Hugh Holston, Denise Roth, and Irving D. Allen won the three open seats.
- District 1: Crystal Black defeated Sharon Hightower.
- District 2: Cecile Crawford won over Monica Walker.
- District 3: April Parker defeated incumbent Zack Matheny.
- District 4: Adam Marshall won against Nicky Smith.
- District 5: Tammi Thurm retained her seat, defeating Jeannette Davidson-Mayer.
All Greensboro municipal races are nonpartisan, and Tuesday’s results reflect a mix of experienced leaders and new voices shaping the city’s future direction.
