Uber Driver Killed in Gastonia Crash

The fatal collision occurred around 7:05 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Gaston Day School Road and Hoffman Road. Investigators say a 19-year-old man from Gastonia was driving a black Cadillac sedan at high speed when he lost control and struck an oncoming Uber vehicle head-on.

According to the Gastonia Police Department, the Uber driver, 53-year-old Janice Lopez of South Carolina, tragically lost her life in the crash. Her backseat passenger, a woman, suffered critical injuries and remains hospitalized.

The impact caused a chain reaction involving two additional vehicles; both drivers sustained serious injuries. Fire crews had to rescue two trapped individuals from the wreckage.
