Did Police Go Too Far? Greensboro Officers Respond to Viral Arrest Video

Introduction

A viral video posted across multiple social platforms has put the Greensboro Police Department under intense public scrutiny. The footage shows officers taking a man to the ground during an arrest on November 2, leaving many residents asking: What really happened before the cameras started rolling?

Police leaders say they’re aware of the video and have opened an immediate review.

What Police Say Happened

According to official statements, the incident began around 11 p.m. when officers were proactively patrolling the 2000 block of Veasley Street. They spotted Nathaniel Williams, 37, seated in a vehicle in a parking lot.

Officers reported seeing marijuana in his lap. They ordered Williams to step out of the vehicle, but police say he refused several lawful commands to exit.

After multiple requests, officers physically removed Williams and placed him in handcuffs.

From Routine Stop to Struggle

Police say the situation escalated when Williams freed one of his hands from the cuffs and assaulted an officer. A struggle followed, continuing onto the ground as Williams allegedly tucked his arm underneath his body to avoid being re-cuffed.

An officer delivered suprascapular strikes—a technique aimed at the upper back/shoulder—intended to make Williams release his arm.

Police report that the arrest was completed without further incident.
