So, who will be breaking for gold for Team USA?

The team consists of four Olympians:

B-girls Sunny Choi and Logan Edra, along with B-boys Jeffrey Louis and Victor Montalvo. Each athlete brings a unique story and passion for their craft.

“I’m really excited and just happy to be able to do this and show the world what we love,” said Choi at an Olympic press conference.

In a bold move, she left her six-figure job as the director of global creative operations at Estée Lauder in New York City in 2022 to pursue her dancing dreams. Her dedication paid off when she qualified for Paris by winning gold at the Pan-American Games last November.

Montalvo, a native of Kissimmee, Florida, expressed his desire to share the essence of hip-hop and breakdancing with a global audience. “I just want to make sure that everyone understands what this dance is about and what hip-hop is about,” he stated. “It’s all about peace, unity, and having fun.”

The Competition Format

The breaking events will feature a unique format where dancers engage in one-on-one battles, each consisting of two 60-second rounds.

Judges will score the performances based on creativity, technique, and musicality. The competition promises to be a vibrant celebration of urban culture, with DJs spinning live music to set the atmosphere.

The women’s competition kicks off at 10 a.m. ET on Friday, followed by the men’s events on Saturday at the same time. The finals for both categories will conclude the day’s events, showcasing the best of breaking talent on the Olympic stage.

Showcasing a Cultural Milestone

The inclusion of breaking in the Olympics marks a significant milestone for the sport, which has its roots in the hip-hop culture of the 1970s in New York. This new Olympic event aims to attract younger audiences and highlight the creativity and athleticism of urban sports, joining the ranks of skateboarding and surfing that debuted in the recent Olympics.

As Team USA prepares to showcase their skills, the world will be watching closely. With a focus on artistry and cultural expression, the breaking events are set to not only entertain but also inspire a new generation to embrace the art of dance.

In this historic moment for breakdancing, Team USA is ready to make its mark at the 2024 Olympics, bringing the spirit of hip-hop to the forefront of the global stage.
