GREENSBORO, N.C. — A tragic confrontation between two students at North Forsyth High School turned deadly Tuesday morning, prompting widespread grief, safety concerns, and an outpouring of support across the Winston-Salem community.
Stabbing Occurred Shortly After Delayed School Opening
Due to winter weather, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools operated on a two-hour delay, with classes beginning at 10:55 a.m. The fatal stabbing took place just minutes after the first bell.
At 11:04 a.m., the school’s resource officer issued an urgent call for backup, describing a critical situation inside the building. Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough later confirmed that the altercation between two students resulted in “a loss of life.”
Officials have not yet released the name of the student who died, but families involved have been notified.
School Leaders and Law Enforcement Respond
In a press conference, Winston-Salem Police Chief William Penn called it “a dark day for our city” and urged the public to stop sharing a video of the stabbing circulating online, calling it insensitive and damaging.
New Superintendent Don Phipps announced that the school would be closed Wednesday, with crisis teams on-site to support students and staff. “Today is the worst nightmare of any educator,” Phipps said. “We hurt when our students hurt.”
The Board of Education meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening was postponed.
