Al Sharpton’s DEI Boycott and February 28th Economic Blackout: A Call to Economic Power and Justice

A Moment of Truth for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The February 28th Economic Blackout is a protest plus—a revolution in economics. Millions are invited to halt all purchasing for 24 hours, sending a forceful message to corporations who have quietly backed away from their pledge to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).

This boycott, being organized by Rev. Al Sharpton and other civil rights leaders, is a reaction to the systemic roll-back of DEI efforts, which had been heralded as the linchpin of a fair and equitable society. However, under growing political and corporate pressures, many corporations have backed away, choosing short-term profits over long-term social accountability.

Now the power shifts back to the people. By rescinding our economic participation, we remind these entities that the lifeline of business is our dollars. If they will not stand for equity, diversity, and social progress, then we will not stand for them.

Why This Economic Blackout Matters

Corporations and banks hear dollars, not morals—that is the unspoken truth behind the boycott. When diverse leadership, inclusive hiring practices, and racial equality initiatives are quietly discarded, financial action is the best response.

The 1955–1956 Montgomery Bus Boycott lasted over a year, crippling the bus system’s revenue and forcing change. The lesson is clear: economic protests work.

The February 28th Blackout is designed to:

• Disrupt big business and their revenue streams.

• Challenge businesses to rethink their strategy on DEI and corporate responsibility.

• Enable communities to use their economic might to support businesses that share their values.

• Open the door for longer, sustained economic demonstrations if necessary.

If one day of financial silence can send shockwaves, imagine the effect of a week, a month, or more.

How to Participate in the February 28th Blackout
