GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — An armed person spotted near the University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG) has been arrested, according to police reports. The incident unfolded on Saturday morning, raising concerns among students and faculty.
Detail on the Armed Person Spotted
Lamar Hemingway, a 32-year-old man from High Point, was taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including:
- One count of felony possession of a firearm by a felon
- One count of felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle
- Two counts of misdemeanour resisting a public officer
- One count of misdemeanour carrying a concealed gun
- One count of misdemeanour going armed to the terror of the people
Court documents reveal that Hemingway had a prior conviction for felony aggravated assault and attempted serious bodily injury in 2015. At the time of his arrest, he was reportedly carrying a Canik 9 mm handgun and allegedly brandished the weapon while walking along West Gate City Boulevard.
The situation escalated around 9:30 a.m. when UNCG issued a Spartan Alert via Facebook, warning students about the armed individual near Tate Street and Oakland Avenue. The alert advised students to evacuate the area and for others to avoid it altogether.
Resolution of the Incident
By 10:05 a.m., university officials announced that there was no longer a safety concern in the vicinity. Later that evening, at 6:39 p.m., UNCG confirmed that the suspect was in police custody.
