GREENSBORO, N.C. — Chief John Thompson has issued a statement addressing the ongoing death investigation of missing man Laequan Tyriq Little, whose body was recovered on Jan. 13.
Little, who had been reported missing since Dec. 31, was found alongside his vehicle in a retention pond near a Bridford Parkway apartment complex. The discovery was made by an underwater recovery team utilizing advanced drone technology during a search led by the nonprofit Rapid Compassion Collective.
Investigation and Community Concerns
Thompson responded to concerns raised by the community regarding the circumstances of Little’s disappearance and subsequent discovery.
“This is a devastating loss for the family and friends of Mr. Little,” Thompson stated. “We extend our appreciation to public and private organizations that supported the family during this difficult time.
This remains an ongoing death investigation, and autopsy results are pending. The cause of death will determine how we proceed. Transparency and accountability are priorities for our department, but we must also protect the integrity of this investigation.”
Thompson emphasized that the department is committed to reviewing processes and resources to support families in similar situations better.
The Search Effort
Little’s family and friends actively participated in the search, noticing tire marks near the pond where his vehicle was eventually found. However, Little’s mother, Tamika, expressed frustration at the delay in finding her son.
“I’m glad that he’s found, but I wanted my son found sooner rather than 13 days,” she said.
The underwater team located the vehicle using a drone and alerted Greensboro police, who coordinated with Guilford County divers to recover Little’s body and vehicle.
Next Steps in the Death Investigation of Missing Man
Chief Thompson assured the public that additional updates will be provided as soon as new information becomes available. “Once the autopsy results are complete, we will share them promptly with the community,” he said.
