RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. – Tragedy struck a Randolph County family on Christmas night when a devastating fire claimed their home and their beloved dog, Gus.
The blaze erupted at Steve Harrelson’s Burney Road residence, a home that had been in his family for over two decades. “There’s too many memories in the house,” Harrelson shared, reflecting on the loss.
Christmas Turned Tragic for Family
The Harrelson family had just wrapped up a day of holiday celebrations. At around 9 p.m., shortly after going to bed, the power breaker tripped. Steve Harrelson checked the breaker box, only to discover flames engulfing the back porch.
As the family scrambled to escape the burning house, they realized Gus, their dog, was still inside. “He got scared and jumped under the couch,” Angela Harrelson said. Firefighters from the Seagrove Fire Department later found Gus, but he did not survive.

Despite losing their home, Christmas presents, and Gus, the Harrelsons remain grateful. “We’ve got our kids, family, and friends helping us. If it had been any later, we might not have made it out,” Angela added.
