Greensboro, NC
North Carolina health officials have confirmed the state’s first measles case of the year, involving a child who travelled from a country experiencing a major outbreak and visited several public places in Guilford and Forsyth counties between June 19 and 22.
According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), the child was not vaccinated against measles and is now recovering.
Officials are working with local health departments to notify individuals who may have been exposed at various public locations, including the Greensboro Science Centre, Sleep Inn in Kernersville, the Greensboro Aquatic Centre, and Piedmont Triad International Airport.
“Measles is one of the most contagious viruses in the world,” said State Epidemiologist Dr. Zack Moore. “If you’re not vaccinated, there’s a very high chance you will get sick if exposed.”
Measles typically starts with a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, followed by a rash that spreads across the body. Complications can be severe, especially for young children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals. Approximately one in five people who contract measles will require hospitalisation.
First Measles Case of the Year

Health officials are urging the public—especially those who may have been at any of the exposure sites during the relevant time frame—to check their immunisation status. Anyone over the age of one who hasn’t received at least one dose of the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) is strongly advised to get vaccinated immediately.
The NCDHHS emphasised that the MMR vaccine is safe, highly effective, and the best defence against outbreaks. Two doses provide about 97% protection.
This case highlights the ongoing importance of immunisation as international travel increases and global measles outbreaks intensify.
