Former Greensboro Mayor Jim Melvin Dies at 91, Leaves Lasting Legacy

GREENSBORO, NC — Jim Melvin, a beloved former mayor known as “Mr. Greensboro,” passed away peacefully on Sunday at the age of 91. Melvin served as Greensboro’s mayor from 1971 to 1981, but his impact on the city extended far beyond his years in office.

Known for his tenacity and dedication, Melvin played a pivotal role in shaping Greensboro’s growth. He championed major projects, including the Bryant Park Golf Club, the Bryant Park Soccer Complex, and the Greensboro-Randolph megasite, which helped attract jobs and prosperity to the region.

Mayor Nancy Vaughan praised Melvin’s lifelong commitment to the community, saying his work touched everything from economic development and education to sports and the arts. “Jim Melvin will be remembered not only for what he built but for the way he built it—with respect, generosity, and unswerving dedication to Greensboro,” she said.
