Greensboro Man Killed in Crash with Tractor-Trailer on US 29 in Rockingham County

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A Greensboro man was killed Tuesday afternoon after a violent collision involving a tractor-trailer on US 29, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Crash Reported Near Benaja Road Exit Around 3:15 PM

Troopers were called to the US 29 South corridor near the Benaja Road exit at approximately 3:15 p.m. following reports of a severe crash between a passenger vehicle and a commercial truck.

Investigators say the tractor-trailer was merging off the Benaja Road exit when a passenger vehicle collided with it, sliding underneath the trailer on impact.

The driver of the car, Philip Straughan III, of Greensboro, died from his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Highway Patrol Investigating Cause of the Collision

State Highway Patrol officials have not yet released specific details about what caused the crash. Troopers continue to examine the crash scene and vehicle data as part of their investigation.

District Attorney to Review Possible Charges

Highway Patrol confirmed they will meet with the Rockingham County District Attorney in the coming days to determine whether charges will be filed against the driver of the tractor-trailer.
