Greensboro Officer Killed in North Carolina Shooting: Former Beach Patrol Member Mourned

BEACH HAVEN, N.J. – Tragedy struck just days before Christmas as a Greensboro, North Carolina police officer, with deep ties to New Jersey, was killed in a supermarket shooting. Officer Michael Horan, who once served over two decades on the Beach Haven Beach Patrol, died in the line of duty on Monday.

A Dedicated Career Cut Short

Officer Michael Horan joined the Greensboro Police Department in 2018 after an extensive career in public service, including time in the U.S. Coast Guard as a maritime enforcement specialist. Known for his professionalism and humor, Horan was a beloved husband, father, and respected officer in the department’s patrol bureau.

The North Carolina Sheriff’s Association condemned the shooting as “a senseless tragedy” and highlighted the daily risks law enforcement officers face.

The incident unfolded at a Food Lion store in northern Greensboro around 11 a.m. Monday. Officer Horan responded to reports of an armed individual inside the store. Shortly after arriving, he encountered the suspect, 34-year-old Tarell Isaac McMillian.

A brief struggle ensued before McMillian drew a weapon and fatally shot Horan. The officer, described by colleagues as an “outstanding professional,” did not have time to fire his weapon. McMillian fled the scene, leading police on a high-speed chase before being apprehended hours later, approximately 150 miles away.

Remembering a Lifesaver

Michael Lawrence, former chief of the Beach Haven Beach Patrol, recalled Horan’s dedication during his time in New Jersey. “He was always looking out for others, whether on the beach or in his community,” Lawrence said.
