High-Speed Crash in North Carolina

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Smithfield man was killed and a woman was critically injured in a fiery, high-speed crash early Sunday morning in Johnston County, according to Wilson’s Mills fire officials.

Crash Reported on Powhatan Road Early Sunday

The crash was reported shortly after 1:45 a.m. Sunday on Powhatan Road at Pocahontas Trail, about two miles northwest of Wilson’s Mills. Fire officials said multiple 911 calls came in reporting a serious crash.

When emergency crews arrived, they found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames after it had crashed into a tree.



Vehicle Traveling Over 100 MPH, Officials Say

The vehicle involved was identified as a 2016 Dodge Charger Hellcat. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the car was traveling well in excess of 100 miles per hour at the time of the crash.

Troopers said the car was heading southeast on Powhatan Road toward Wilson’s Mills when it left the roadway and struck a tree.

Road Closed During Investigation

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze but worked for approximately 30 minutes to remove the driver from the wreckage. Powhatan Road was closed between Wilson Farm Lane and Colonial Drive for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

Crews from Clayton Rescue 1 assisted during the incident.
