GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — In response to the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa, Samaritan’s Purse in Greensboro has launched a major disaster relief effort to help communities in Jamaica begin their recovery.

At 9:05 a.m. Thursday, the Christian humanitarian organization deployed its 757 cargo plane filled with 38,000 pounds of critical supplies from its Greensboro aviation base. The shipment includes shelter materials, water filtration systems, medical supplies, solar lights, and other essential equipment to assist families affected by the hurricane.

According to a press release from Samaritan’s Purse, 32 disaster relief specialists will be on the ground in Jamaica by the end of Thursday, helping coordinate distribution and provide immediate support to storm victims.

Hurricane Melissa brought heavy rains, flooding, and widespread damage across the island, displacing thousands and leaving many communities without power or access to clean water.

To bolster relief efforts, Samaritan’s Purse also plans to send a second flight on Friday, using its DC-8 cargo aircraft to deliver additional aid and deploy another 28 disaster assistance response team members.

The organization, led by Franklin Graham, has a long history of providing rapid response to natural disasters worldwide. Its Greensboro facility serves as a major logistics hub for international humanitarian missions, including this latest operation responding to Hurricane Melissa.
