Is the Renovated Playground Safe for Children? Greensboro Parents Raise Concerns at Country Park

Is the Renovated Playground Safe for Children

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Many parents are asking, “Is the renovated playground safe for children?” after a Greensboro couple voiced their concerns about the new equipment at Country Park during a recent city council meeting.

Eddie and Monica Souther, parents of two toddlers, say what used to be their favorite family spot has now become a source of worry.

Parents Say Playground Design is Unsafe

Eddie Souther, father of three, warned city leaders that the new design could cause injuries.

“If a kid falls from six feet, I’m afraid somebody’s going to break their arm,” he told council members.

His wife, Monica, echoed those concerns, saying the elevated walkways and lack of protective barriers make the playground unsafe for their children, 4-year-old Ryder and 2-year-old Lily.

“It scares me when kids are going up and down, and one day I had to pull my son back when he was hanging off the side,” she explained. The couple now avoids the playground and travels further away to safer alternatives.

City Explains Why Playground Was Replaced

Greensboro city leaders said the old playground at Country Park was more than 20 years old and needed replacement. The new structures are ADA-compliant, featuring a paved path and mulch safety surfacing.

However, city officials acknowledge that the new setup may not meet all community expectations.

“We’ve heard the concerns and feedback regarding the play structures, especially about the age ranges they best serve,” said Jennifer Hance, Community Engagement Coordinator for Greensboro Parks and Recreation. “In October, we’ll be holding community engagement sessions to have one-on-one conversations and better understand what residents truly want from the play space.”

Not Fully Inclusive Yet

Officials noted that while Country Park is ADA-compliant, it is not a fully inclusive playground. For families seeking that option, the city recommends visiting Keeley Park, which has a wider range of accessible features.
