Focus on Immigrant/Refugee Youth Empowerment
The International Youth Festival is more than just a day of celebration. Jalloh’s Upright Services of North Carolina (JUS-NC) organizes this festival to offer a safe space for immigrant/refugee youth. We provide food security, mental health support, and resources that help these young individuals thrive in our community. The goal is to promote inclusiveness, self-expression, and positive behaviors.
Sports, Education, and Cultural Exchange
The event boasts several engaging activities to stimulate learning and cultural interaction. We’ll be hosting a basketball tournament, a volleyball championship, and an American history trivia competition. Additionally, we will have a writing competition, which forms part of the trivia questions. With culturally appropriate food and a competition for the most patriotically dressed individual, we anticipate a lively, meaningful exchange that encourages young immigrants to acclimate comfortably to their new surroundings.
A Safe, Nurturing, and Interactive Environment
We expect 200-250 young immigrants from across Greensboro to participate in the festival. We aim to provide a safe and nourishing environment that breaks down barriers and fosters positive relationships between immigrant youth and law enforcement. With an array of resources from our supporting vendors, we hope to provide a sense of belonging for these young people and connect them with their peers, friends, and family. The festival is also designed to bridge the gap between American youth and immigrant families from diverse backgrounds, contributing to the positive development of the community as a whole.
A Unique Approach to Community Service and Education
This project uniquely combines elements of education and community service to address pressing issues in a hands-on, interactive way. We hope to replicate this model in other communities, broadening its impact and fostering inclusivity and unity wherever it’s adopted.
