GREENSBORO, N.C. — President Donald Trump canceled Kamala Harris’ Secret Service detail, sparking criticism and concern just weeks before the former vice president is set to embark on a high-profile book tour.
According to a letter reviewed by CNN, Trump revoked an executive order signed by former President Joe Biden that had extended Harris’ Secret Service protection beyond the standard six months granted to former vice presidents. That order, which had not been previously disclosed, gave Harris an additional year of federal protection. Trump officially canceled it on Thursday in a directive to the Department of Homeland Security.
“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” the letter stated.
Harris’ Upcoming Book Tour Raises Security Questions
The decision comes as Harris prepares for the release of her memoir “107 Days” on September 23, recounting her brief presidential campaign. The tour is expected to draw large crowds across multiple cities, putting her back in the national spotlight.
Harris’ senior adviser, Kirsten Allen, thanked the Secret Service for their service, saying Harris was “grateful for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”

However, the cancellation has raised concerns about her security, particularly given her historic role as the first woman and first Black woman to serve as vice president. According to those familiar with her security operations, Harris continued to face elevated threats well into this year.
Political Backlash in California
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass both expressed outrage over the decision. Bass called the move “another act of revenge” and pledged to work with state officials to ensure Harris’ safety.
Newsom spokesperson Bob Salladay said, “The safety of our public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulses.”
With federal protection ending, Harris may now have to rely on private security or local law enforcement. Experts warn the cost of providing comparable private protection could run into the millions of dollars annually.
A Precedent-Setting Move
While former presidents receive lifetime protection, former vice presidents are only guaranteed six months. Biden’s secret extension was unprecedented and aimed at ensuring Harris’ safety amid lingering post-election tensions. Trump’s decision to revoke that order adds a new flashpoint to ongoing political battles between the two administrations.
As Trump cancels Kamala Harris’ Secret Service detail, the debate over security, political retaliation, and the safety of public officials continues to intensify.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
