GREENSBORO, N.C. — President Donald Trump said in a recent interview that media moguls Lachlan Murdoch and Rupert Murdoch are likely part of a TikTok buyer group working to secure the app’s future in the United States.
Speaking on the first episode of Fox News’s The Sunday Briefing with Peter Doocy, Trump named the Murdochs, Oracle executive Larry Ellison, and Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell as among those reportedly involved in discussions to purchase TikTok from its China-based parent company, ByteDance.
“I hate to tell you this, but a man named Lachlan is involved,” Trump said. “And Rupert is probably gonna be in the group. I think they’re going to be in the group … really great people, very prominent people. And they’re also American patriots.”
The comments came just days after Trump announced that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping had reached an agreement to support efforts to keep TikTok operational in the U.S. However, Chinese officials appeared less certain, suggesting that negotiations were ongoing and no final deal had been signed.
Congress passed a bipartisan bill in 2024 requiring ByteDance to divest from TikTok or face a nationwide ban. While Trump has granted multiple extensions, pressure remains high to finalize a deal that ensures American ownership and control of TikTok’s influential algorithm.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed over the weekend that the pending agreement would make the app “majority-owned by Americans in the United States,” with its technology under U.S. oversight.
If finalized, the involvement of high-profile figures — including Lachlan Murdoch and Rupert Murdoch in the TikTok buyer group — would mark a major shift in the ownership of one of the world’s most popular social media platforms.
