Malik Mebane, a 15-year-old football player from Burlington, North Carolina, tragically passed away after collapsing during a practice at Cummings High School on September 25, 2024. His mother, Kalicia Mebane, described Malik as a “gentle giant” who was excited to play football this year, as it was his first year on the team.
The incident occurred at the high school’s football practice, but details surrounding the exact cause of Malik’s death have not been released. The family is currently mourning the loss of the young athlete, whose passion for the sport was cut short by this devastating tragedy.
Malik Mebane tragic death; on the Jersey’s Football game.
Recently, Malik had just selected the number 63 for his football Jersey and he was eagerly looking forward to wearing it at CHS’s varsity game, which is to schedule for Friday, unfortunately he passed away and the game has been postponed due to weather. The game will commence on Monday and will be dedicated to Malik.
Malik’s passing is the latest in a series of student football player deaths reported across the United States in recent weeks. In August, 13-year-old Cohen Craddock from West Virginia died following a collision during practice, while 16-year-old Caden Tellier from Alabama succumbed to a brain injury sustained during a game. Another Alabama teen, Semaj Wilkins, also passed away after experiencing a medical emergency at practice.
These tragic events have once again highlighted the importance of player safety and the need for enhanced measures to protect young athletes participating in contact sports like football. As the Mebane family grieves the loss of their beloved son, their story serves as a poignant reminder of the risks involved and the need for continued efforts to ensure the well-being of student athletes nationwide.
The entire family of Mebane is grateful to the community’s and GoFundMe for burial expenses.
