Man convicted in killing of Georgia nursing student

ATHENS ,Ga.(AP)-Jose Ibarra, a 26 year old man from Venezuela was found guilty of murdering Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, of 22, during a trial that concluded on November 20, 2024. Ibarra was convicted on multiple charges, including malice murder and felony murder, and faces a life sentence without parole.

The prosecution argued that Ibarra attacked Riley while she was jogging on the University of Georgia campus on February 22, 2024, after she resisted his attempted sexual assault. The case sparked national discussions on immigration, as Ibarra was an undocumented migrant who entered the U.S in 2022 and was allowed to stay in the county while he pursue his immigration case.

The trial began on Friday and prosecutors called more than a dozen law enforcement officers, Riley’s roommates and a woman who lived in the same apartment as Ibarra.

However, Riley’s parents, roommates and other friends and family packed the courtroom throughout the trial.
