RALEIGH, N.C. – Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson has filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against CNN, accusing the network of false reporting and character assassination. The lawsuit, announced at a press conference in Raleigh on Tuesday, follows a CNN report alleging that Robinson made offensive remarks on a pornographic website, including calling himself “a Black Nazi” and supporting slavery before his political career. Robinson and his campaign have dismissed the report as “smear” tactics and “outrageous lies.”
Mark Robinson Suing CNN for “High-Tech Lynching”
At the press conference, Robinson directly addressed the allegations, saying, “We are holding CNN accountable. This is a high-tech lynching of a candidate who has been targeted from day one by those who disagree with my political views and want to see me destroyed.” He emphasized that the lawsuit is a crucial step in pushing back against what he considers a politically motivated attack.
Robinson has retained the Binnall Law Group, led by attorney Jesse Binnall, a former lawyer for Donald Trump, to challenge CNN’s report. Binnall stated that a former FBI special agent, along with trial attorneys and former federal prosecutors, led the investigation into the allegations. According to Binnall, their findings support Robinson’s claims that the accusations are false.
Legal Strategy and Accusations Against CNN
Binnall described the lawsuit as the initial outcome of their investigation and promised to utilize legal avenues like subpoenas to uncover the truth. “We will use every tool at our disposal now that a lawsuit has been filed, including the subpoena power, in order to continue pursuing the facts,” Binnall said, addressing those he believes are obstructing the investigation. He criticized the CNN report, labelling it as a “journalistic hit job” driven by “actual malice” and a “reckless disregard for the truth.”
