Miss North Carolina Winner Speaks on Her Battle With Rare Cancer

RALEIGH, N.C.Miss North Carolina winner speaks on her battle with rare cancer, sharing her emotional journey just months after passing on her crown. Carrie Everett, who held the Miss North Carolina 2024 title, revealed that she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of gastric cancer shortly after the end of her reign.

Everett, a former North Carolina Central University student, described her year as Miss North Carolina as one filled with joy, opportunities, and connections. But her life changed drastically only weeks after she crowned her successor.

“I started to experience bloating and coughing. I initially went to the doctor and was told nothing was wrong with my stomach,” Everett recalled. “One week later, I was told that I had masses in my pelvis, and it came back positive for cancer.”

Doctors confirmed the cancer had metastasized, and Everett soon began treatment in Seattle, Washington, near her hometown. She spent three weeks in the hospital to regain her ability to walk, with her family by her side every step of the way.

Everett has already completed three rounds of chemotherapy and faces nine more. When her hair began to fall out, her family chose to show solidarity by shaving their heads alongside her. “I have an amazing family, and everybody decided to cut their hair with me,” Everett said.

Her mother, Mary Everett, expressed faith and determination: “We will go through it together, we will pray through it together. Whatever we have to do, we know that God is going to bring us out victorious.”

Despite her diagnosis, Everett remains committed to helping others. She says her experience has inspired her to raise awareness and funds for people living with rare cancers. “This is happening for a reason, and God has allowed me to use my voice to give a voice to others,” she said.

Everett continues her treatment in Seattle, supported by her family and community. Donations have been set up to assist with her medical costs and other expenses during this challenging time.
