RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles announced a new initiative this week, confirming that the NCDMV will allow driver schools to conduct teen road tests in an effort to improve accessibility and reduce wait times.

According to officials, certified private driver education schools can now administer road tests for teens seeking their Level 2 Limited Provisional License. Teens with a Level 1 Limited Learner Permit will have the option to take the test at one of these schools instead of waiting for an appointment at an NCDMV office.
NCDMV leaders said this approach is designed to ease the workload at driver license offices and provide families with more flexibility. Teens who successfully pass a road test at a certified private driver education school will only need to visit an NCDMV office to purchase and receive their provisional license.
“By outsourcing some road tests to certified private driver education schools, we’re providing more options for teens and their families while increasing efficiency at our driver license offices,” NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine said.
Each participating driver education school will determine the cost of the road tests. Teens may still choose to take their road test directly at an NCDMV office if they prefer.
