North Carolina Truckers Taking Steps to Stay Ahead of Helene Delays

North Carolina truckers are facing new challenges post-Hurricane Helene as they work to navigate road closures and difficult conditions across the state, particularly in the western regions. With more than 277,000 truckers transporting 237 tons of freight daily, delays can have a significant impact on supply chains.

New Routes And Techniques

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has advised truckers, especially those driving rigs longer than 30 feet, to avoid using popular GPS apps like Google Maps and Waze. Instead, they recommend checking DOT websites for real-time road closures and conditions. Many truckers are also reverting to tried-and-true methods, like listening to local AM/FM radio stations and communicating with fellow drivers through CB radios.

North Carolina Truckers Facing Delays

Bill’s Truck Stop near Lexington has become a gathering spot for North Carolina truckers looking for updates on road conditions. Veteran trucker Timothy Minter emphasized the importance of staying informed, especially when heading west. “If you’re not sure about the road conditions, check with state troopers or other reliable sources,” Minter said. “It’s going to take time before some areas are cleared.”

Truckers are advised to avoid Interstate 40 and take alternative routes like Interstate 77 to Interstate 81, which could add up to 30 minutes to travel time.

For the latest updates, North Carolina truckers are encouraged to visit NCDrive.gov and monitor road conditions under the Hurricane Helene tab.
