We Will Use Tariff Money to Fund Nutrition Program Amid Shutdown – White House

Nutrition Program Amid Shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The White House says it will use tariff money to fund nutrition program amid shutdown, stepping in to support millions of low-income mothers and children as federal funding for the WIC program runs dry.

According to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, President Donald Trump approved what she called a “creative solution” — reallocating tariff revenue to sustain the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). The program was expected to run out of funds within days due to the ongoing government shutdown.

“The Trump White House will not allow impoverished mothers and their babies to go hungry because of the Democrats’ political games,” Leavitt said Tuesday on X.

It remains unclear how much tariff money will be directed to the WIC program or whether the administration has the legal authority to redirect those funds without congressional approval.

The WIC program provides food vouchers, baby formula, and essential nutrition support to millions of low-income families across the United States. The funding shortfall emerged after Congress failed to pass appropriations bills before the end of the fiscal year.

Some states had prepared to use state reserves to temporarily sustain WIC, but many warned they could not maintain that support for long.

The White House says it will use tariff money to fund nutrition program amid shutdown as the federal government approaches its one-week closure, with no clear path forward in Washington. The Senate has rejected the GOP’s stopgap funding bill multiple times, as Democrats demand that the measure include an extension of Affordable Care Act premium tax credits, set to expire this year.

As negotiations stall, millions of families now await clarity — and relief — from Washington’s political standoff.
