HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — Parents across the Triad are scrambling to find new schools for their children after the High Point charter school’s immediate closure left families without warning. The Triad International Studies Academy (TISA) abruptly shut down Wednesday, despite previously telling parents the school would remain open until December.
Many of the affected parents say they were stunned to receive a notice Tuesday night announcing that classes would end the next day. The sudden decision has especially impacted families with children who have unique learning needs and rely on specialized programs.
On Wednesday evening, Guilford County Schools (GCS) hosted an emergency meeting at Kirkman Park Elementary to help displaced families find solutions. Representatives from Allen Jay, Kirkman Park, and Northwood elementary schools attended the meeting to discuss available programs, including Spanish immersion options.
“When crisis happens, and we need to jump in, we need to take things off of parents’ plates,” said High Point City Councilwoman Amanda Cook, who helped coordinate with school officials. Cook explained that the state informed TISA it would lose funding due to low enrollment, but the early shutdown was the school’s own decision after realizing it couldn’t afford to pay staff through December.
Parents Blindsided by High Point Charter School
“It’s really unfair how everything went down,” said Dulce Garcia, a parent whose daughter attended TISA. “My job was based on her school schedule, so that affected us.”
GCS Deputy Superintendent Anitra Wells said the district is working to minimize lost learning time, encouraging families to enroll their children immediately. “We are here with open arms,” Wells said. “We just want parents to know Guilford County is available to them.”
The High Point charter school’s immediate closure has drawn frustration and disappointment from families, but district leaders say they are committed to helping students transition smoothly into new schools without delay.
