Pilot Mountain town manager fired after Misuse of town Funds

PILOT MOUNTAIN , N.C.( WGHP)- Pilot Mountain’s town manager, Michael Boaz, was fired on December 3, 2024, following allegations of misusing town funds. This came after the former state Auditor, Beth Wood, presented her findings to commissioners on Monday night. The bottom line is the town, doesn’t have the cash. wood took a careful look at the finance of pilot mountain from 2024 and found out that, there are some red flags as the budget amendments were made in town’s computer system that the board of commissioners did not approve and increase in the budget to cover the expenditures which were also not approved by commissioners.

Wood discovered a total amount of $508,000 as the increase were not approved by the board and impacting local entities like the Pilot Rescue Squad. She said the monies has being spent , because there was no additional revenues coming in for 2024. She said a deeper dive into the towns finances is needed to completely figure it out

. The town will have to depend on insurance to help with the dealing with financial situation and also selling some of their assets to help generate funds.The town plans to investigate further and recover misappropriated funds, with findings from an external audit expected soon.
