GREENSBORO, N.C. — With U.S. Senator Thom Tillis not seeking re-election in 2026, the race for his North Carolina Senate seat is already drawing national attention. Among the leading names being discussed is former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper, whose political future has become a key topic for analysts across the state.
In a recent edition of The Buckley Report on FOX8, political experts weighed in on Cooper’s potential candidacy and his chances of securing the Senate seat if he enters the race.
Democratic Advantage
Roy Cooper, who recently completed two terms as Governor of North Carolina, remains one of the most recognizable Democrats in the state. Many experts believe his statewide popularity, combined with his history of electoral success, could make him a strong contender in a closely divided state.
“Cooper has never lost an election,” noted political analyst Michael Bitzer. “He knows how to campaign in North Carolina. He’s known from the coast to the mountains.”
But despite Cooper’s favorable track record, political experts caution that the race will not be easy. North Carolina has leaned Republican in recent federal elections, and the GOP is expected to invest heavily to hold the seat.
On the Republican side, Michael Whatley, the current chairman of the Republican National Committee and a close ally of President Donald Trump, is widely expected to run. With Trump’s endorsement, Whatley is likely to have strong institutional support from the national party.

Dr. David McLennan, a political science professor at Meredith College, said the race could come down to turnout and messaging. “If Democrats can mobilize the same level of voter enthusiasm as they did during Cooper’s gubernatorial campaigns, they have a real shot,” he said. “But Republicans will frame Cooper as too liberal for Washington.”
Political Experts Discuss Possibility of Former Governor Roy Cooper Winning U.S. Senate Race
With no incumbent in the race, North Carolina’s Senate contest is likely to be one of the most competitive—and expensive—of the 2026 cycle. Both parties see the seat as critical to determining control of the U.S. Senate.
As of now, Cooper has not officially announced his candidacy. But several Democratic insiders believe he is seriously considering it, and recent moves—including increased fundraising activity and strategic public appearances—have only fueled speculation.
