GREENSBORO, N.C. — The City of Greensboro is moving forward with plans to install red light cameras at select intersections as part of a broader effort to improve traffic safety and reduce serious crashes.
City Council Approves Multi-Year Contract
The Greensboro City Council has approved a $1.6 million multi-year contract with NovoaGlobal, a Florida-based firm that will provide and manage the camera system. Initial installation will begin at five intersections, though the specific locations have not yet been finalized.
Crash Data Guides Camera Placement
According to Greensboro Transportation Director Hanna Cockburn, the city analyzed crash data from 25 intersections with the most severe incidents—those involving fatalities or serious injuries. From that list, officials will select the top five intersections where red light cameras are expected to have the greatest safety impact.

Cockburn says the decision is backed by extensive research showing red light cameras can reduce both crashes and fatalities. “There’s quite a body of research around the use and deployment of red light cameras,” she said. “They do demonstrate a reduction in crashes and a reduction in fatalities overall.”
Timeline and Enforcement Details
City officials anticipate deploying the cameras by this spring. Drivers who run a red light at a monitored intersection will receive a $50 civil fine. The violations will not carry criminal penalties or points on a driver’s license.
