Donald Trump was initially leading the 2024 presidential race, but the dynamics shifted dramatically with the entry of his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris. Recent polls indicate a growing support for Harris, leading to a downward trend for Trump’s MAGA campaign.
Veteran Republican pollster Frank Luntz has analysed these developments and placed the blame squarely on Trump, stating he is “single-handedly destroying” his chances of winning the upcoming elections.
Luntz, often referred to as the ‘Nostradamus of pollsters,’ noted that Harris is now “slightly favoured” by the American public over Trump. He pointed out that while the MAGA campaign itself is disciplined, the candidate’s behaviour is not. “The campaign is disciplined; their candidate is not,” Luntz explained, emphasising that Trump’s attacks are backfiring and diminishing their effectiveness against a seemingly weak Democratic nominee.
Trump’s history of aggressive rhetoric has begun to alienate some of his supporters, including donors. His recent comments regarding Harris’ heritage, where he suggested she “just happened to turn black,” have sparked widespread outrage, further complicating his campaign strategy.
In contrast, Harris is currently enjoying what many describe as a ‘honeymoon’ period, captivating audiences with her dynamic speeches at rallies in crucial battleground states. Her rising popularity is reflected in the polls, where she is now seen as a formidable opponent against Trump as the November elections approach.
Poll Declining: Republican Pollster Blames Trump
Luntz suggests that Trump needs to pivot his strategy to regain his footing. He believes Trump should focus on Harris’ weaknesses, particularly regarding the ongoing border crisis and the struggling economy, rather than resorting to personal insults. “Right now, I think Trump’s gonna lose because he’s incapable of sticking to a message about inflation or immigration,” Luntz remarked.
Despite facing numerous legal challenges and a recent assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump had previously maintained momentum. However, Luntz argues that Trump’s lack of discipline in his messaging could cost him dearly.
Another pollster, John Zogby, echoed Luntz’s concerns, highlighting that while Trump’s campaign was more organised than in previous elections, it is now up against a younger candidate, making the age debate less relevant. “The campaign was much more disciplined than last time… but that’s not the case anymore,” Zogby stated.
As the election nears, the pressure is mounting on Trump to recalibrate his approach. The Republican Party is watching closely as the polling landscape continues to shift, with Harris gaining ground and Trump’s tactics being scrutinised.
