An Indiana man who was pardoned by former U.S. President Donald Trump for his role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop on Sunday.
The incident involved Matthew Huttle, 42, who was fatally wounded by a Jasper County Sheriff’s deputy after an altercation escalated during the stop. According to a news release from the Indiana State Police, Huttle resisted arrest, leading to a confrontation in which the officer fired his weapon.
Rioter Pardoned by Trump Shot During Arrest
The Indiana State Police confirmed that Huttle was armed at the time of the traffic stop. State police are conducting the investigation in collaboration with the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities have not disclosed the specific reason for the attempted arrest but emphasized transparency in handling the case.

“For full transparency, I requested the Indiana State Police to investigate this officer-involved shooting,” said Jasper County Sheriff Patrick Williamson. The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave, following standard protocol.
Trump’s Clemency Order
Huttle was among the individuals granted a pardon by Trump after serving six months in federal prison for entering a restricted building during the Capitol riot. Trump’s clemency order, issued on his first day back in office, pardoned over 1,500 individuals and commuted sentences for 14 others.
The Capitol riot, widely condemned as an attack on American democracy, left more than 100 law enforcement officers injured as rioters sought to prevent the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.

Another Pardoned Rioter Faces Legal Trouble
Huttle’s death follows another incident involving a January 6 participant pardoned by Trump. Last week, Daniel Charles Ball, 39, was arrested in Florida on a pending gun charge. Authorities had previously seized firearms and ammunition from Ball’s residence.
These incidents highlight the ongoing consequences of the Capitol riot and the complexities surrounding Trump’s controversial clemency decisions.
