A Hero’s Final Act: Sgt. Dale Nix of Greensboro Police Department
On Dec. 30, 2023, Sgt. Dale Nix confronted suspected thieves at the Sheetz on Sandy Ridge Road. Reports indicate the suspects, including Jamere Justice Foster, had allegedly stolen approximately $85 worth of beer. Tragically, Foster opened fire on Nix, who succumbed to his injuries despite immediate aid from an off-duty officer and a Guilford County paramedic.
A memorial plaque honouring the selflessness of Sgt. Dale Nix of the Greensboro Police Department now stands at the site.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Following the incident, Foster faced multiple charges, including felony first-degree murder, larceny, and conspiracy. Accomplices John Walter Morrison and Zquriah Lepearce Blackwell were charged with related crimes, including accessory after the fact. Indictments further detailed the suspects’ roles in aiding Foster’s escape and attempts to destroy evidence.
In September, a grand jury indicted Foster for first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and additional charges. Morrison was also indicted for first-degree murder, while Blackwell faced charges of accessory after the fact.
Officer Michael Horan
This anniversary comes just a week after another devastating loss for the Greensboro Police Department. Officer Michael Horan was shot and killed on Dec. 23 while responding to an incident at a local Food Lion. These back-to-back tragedies have left the department and community mourning the loss of two dedicated public servants.
