
GREENSBORO, N.C. — A deadly stabbing at North Forsyth High School on Tuesday has left one student dead and another injured, prompting school closures, a major law enforcement response, and an outpouring of grief from community leaders.
Sheriff Confirms “Loss of Life” After Student Fight
Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough announced during an afternoon press conference that the incident began as an “altercation” between students before escalating into a fatal stabbing. Emergency personnel responded just after 1 p.m., and families of the students involved have been notified.
“There is no doubt there was a loss of life today,” Kimbrough said, calling it “another sad day in Forsyth County.” He asked the community to pray for the students, their families, and the school.
One Student Killed, Another Injured in School Stabbing
An email sent to parents by Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools confirmed that one student died and another was injured. Governor Josh Stein later referred to the incident as a stabbing in a statement posted on X.
Kimbrough emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that additional details will be released when appropriate.
Police Chief Condemns Video Sharing: “This Is Not the Time to Clout Chase”
Winston-Salem Police Chief William Penn called the tragedy “a dark day for our city,” urging the public to stop sharing graphic video footage of the altercation online.
“Please think about the insensitive nature of what you’re doing,” Penn said. “This is not the time to clout chase.”
North Forsyth High School Closed; Crisis Team Activated
New Superintendent Dr. Don Phipps, who was sworn in recently, announced that North Forsyth High School will be closed on Wednesday, with crisis counselors on site to support students and staff.
“Today is the worst nightmare of any educator,” Phipps said. “We hurt when our students hurt, and this is the ultimate hurt.”
Governor, Mayor Release Statements of Support
Governor Josh Stein called the stabbing “shocking and horrible,” adding that safety in schools must remain a top priority. He confirmed speaking directly with Sheriff Kimbrough to offer assistance.
Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines also released a statement expressing the city’s condolences and reaffirming efforts to engage youth through its new crime-reduction initiative.
“The untimely departure of such a promising young life is a tragedy that touches us all,” Joines wrote.
