BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — The Buncombe County community is reeling after the loss of four students in Helene, as confirmed by the superintendent during a recent board of education meeting. The students lost their lives due to the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene, leaving a profound impact on families and the entire school system.

Superintendent’s Statement on the Students in Helene

During the board meeting held on Friday, Rob Jackson, Superintendent of Buncombe County Schools, expressed his deep sorrow over the loss. “I’m extremely broken-hearted to share that since the storm’s arrival, we’ve also lost four of our students,” Jackson stated, highlighting the community’s grief during this difficult time.

As of now, specific details about which schools the students in Helene attended have not been disclosed.

Efforts to Reconnect with Students and Staff Amid the Crisis

As at now, the Buncombe County Schools system has made significant efforts to reconnect with the community. According to Superintendent Jackson, direct contact has been made with over 22,200 students, while efforts continue to connect with 21 more, including some who may have left the country. Furthermore, the school system has reached 100% of its staff members, ensuring that support is available during this challenging period.

Resumption of Extracurricular Activities After Helene

The Buncombe County Schools system has announced that academic, arts, and athletic high school extracurricular activities will resume on Monday, October 14, 2024. This step is aimed at restoring a sense of normalcy for students in Helene’s aftermath, providing opportunities for students to reconnect and engage in activities that promote emotional well-being.

Currently, all schools have power, but only 13 out of 45 schools have water access. The City of Asheville has not yet provided a timeline for when full water service will be restored. Despite these challenges, 39 schools have regained internet connectivity, allowing for better communication and virtual learning where needed.
